IPCC’s 2022 climate report – our response

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published its Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability report. The report concluded that our world has a “brief and rapidly closing” window to adapt to climate change.

The Sixth Assessment Report, published on 28 February 2022, assesses the impacts that climate change has on our ecosystems, biodiversity, and human communities at global and regional levels. The 3,675 page report comes from a voluntary and collective effort by 330 scientists and academics.

The report’s findings

The findings of the reports have been described as the “atlas of human suffering and a damning indictment of failed climate leadership”.

“With fact upon fact, this report reveals how people and the planet are getting clobbered by climate change. Unchecked carbon pollution is forcing the world’s most vulnerable on a frog march to destruction – now. The facts are undeniable,” said Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General.

“The latest IPCC report is alarming to say the least,” commented Dan Smith, Head of Energy Services for ClearVUE. “While we are all aware of the impacts that the climate crisis will have on our environment, this report is the first that directly links the climate crisis to people, nature and the economy as well.”

The latest report concludes that many of the adverse effects of climate change have reached the stage of irreversibility. Now, the panel says, is the time for governments, organisations, and individuals to learn to “adapt”.

“Adaptation saves lives,” added Guterres. “As climate impacts worsen – and they will – scaling up investments will be essential for survival.”

Smith says: “The report states about half the world’s population – over 3 billion people – are living in highly vulnerable areas, and places like Africa which contributes less to the crisis will suffer more from the impacts.”

Adaptation that will help lessen the impact for the vulnerable will come in the form of investments towards technologies and policies. For example, cities, businesses, and other large entities should push for renewable energy and greener transport and buildings. This could limit destructive climate impacts for millions.

“We can limit suffering by adapting to the conditions of a warmer world”, the report says. It adds that limiting global warming too close to 1.5C may not prevent losses to nature, societies, or economies, but it will greatly reduce them.

However, we cannot wait to adapt, the panel warns. It must be done now, as any delay will invite more climate catastrophes.

“The report does suggest that there is still a window of opportunity in which we can act in order to secure a liveable future, but this window of opportunity is closing fast. We simply need to act right now; we must accelerate the change to a renewable future. In simple terms: stop burning stuff!”
